Even though tickets were sold out, thankfully managed to get a ticket last minute off a friend so I could see Newton Faulkner supported by Angus and Julia Stone at Exeter Uni’s Great Hall.
I’ve been a big fan of Angus and Julia Stone since my house mate introduced me to them in the summer of 07. He saw them at the Rip Curl Boardmasters event in Newquay and was raving about their sound and their live performance. Ever since hearing the song ‘Mango Tree‘ I’ve been listening to their EPs and albums with the amazing, recently released ‘A Book Like This‘, being my favourite. As a result I went with high expectations and was not disappointed. My house mate was right, they were amazing live and their chilled out ‘beach side’ feel had me hooked throughout. Was also really cool to see brother and sister playing together, loving what they do.
Newton as always was immense. After seeing him a few times over the past few years, it was great seeing him perform with a band for the first time. Again everyone, regardless of their knowledge of guitar was blown away by Newtons phenomenal technique and percussive tapping style (see videos below), even more more so that he somehow manages to sing at the same time. Newton is easily a first class entertainer, not just when he’s playing but with his funny random stories and hilarious covers including of course the ever asked for “Spongebob Squarepants” which he just can’t seem to escape. I can’t wait for his next album after hearing a new track”For God’s sake” which was one of the high lights of the night.
It should be no surprise then that he’s made it so quickly. He went from not long ago gigging in bars to supporting John Mayer at the Royal Albert Hall, playing on Radio 1 and having his latest album “Hand built by robots” flying of the shelves. Still despite all this, great to see that fame hasn’t changed him at all. Who else would play Spongebob at the Royal Albert Hall!
